Gjirokastër — The Stone City

A UNESCO town of slate roofs and Ottoman fortresses — a long but stunning drive south.

Long day or 2-day overnight (recommended) May – October Southern Albania

Gjirokastër, the 'Stone City', is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its grey slate-roofed houses, steep cobbled streets, and imposing hilltop castle. Birthplace of writer Ismail Kadare, it feels like stepping back in time. The drive from Durrës is long but beautiful — through the Vjosa valley and past dramatic mountain scenery. Because of the distance we usually recommend an overnight stay; we can drop you off and pick you up the next day, or arrange a one-way transfer.

Highlights

  • Gjirokastër Castle and Cold War tunnel
  • Ottoman bazaar and stone-roofed houses
  • Skenduli & Zekate traditional houses
  • Optional add-on: Blue Eye spring or Butrint National Park

Things to Do There

Pick what you fancy — your driver is flexible.

Explore Gjirokastër Castle

One of the largest castles in the Balkans, with a Cold War tunnel, a weapons museum, and sweeping views over the Drino valley.

Wander the stone-roofed Old Bazaar

Steep cobbled streets lined with traditional shops selling antiques, lace, and silverwork unique to this region.

Visit the Skenduli or Zekate House

Two of the best-preserved Ottoman-era family homes in Albania — wooden ceilings, painted rooms, and cool stone cellars.

Try qifqi for lunch

A Gjirokastër specialty: small rice balls flavored with herbs and egg, best eaten in the bazaar at a family-run restaurant.

Add on the Blue Eye spring

On the way back, we can route via Syri i Kaltër — a vivid blue karst spring surrounded by forest. Perfect for a short walk and photos.

Optional: Butrint National Park

If you have the time (and stay overnight), Butrint's Greek and Roman ruins by the lagoon are an unforgettable add-on.
